For the first time, the members of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) organised a meeting for the Central Africa sub-region. This meeting was held in Limbé in the Southwest region of Cameroon.

The first phase from 25th – 28th May 2009 was a coordinators’ training workshop: the national prevention of blindness coordinators or their assistants came from Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Congo - Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Chad, Sao Tome and Cameroon.

Dr Etya’ale, the VISION 2020 Coordinator for Africa at the WHO, was the lead facilitator of the workshop, supported by Dr Joseph Oye (IAPB co-chair and SightSavers International SSI country director for Cameroon) and Cyrille Evini (programme manager of SSI Cameroon): the main topics covered focused on leadership, team management, advocacy and resource mobilisation. Right to Sight also participated in the training, through a training session held by Isabelle Hoyaux on sustainability in eye care services.

On 29th May 2009 was held the first sub-regional IAPB coordination’s meeting. The national coordinators were joined by NGOs working in Central Africa (namely CBM, HKI, IEF, SightFirst). The aim of the meeting was to present the eye care situation and national programme in the Central African countries. The NGOs also presented their current and future investment in the region. The outcome of the workshop was the development of a strategic plan with the priorities for the sub-region in terms of eye care.
