In collaboration with local partners the KwaZulu-Natal Eye Care Coalition and the Department of Health, RTS has this month started services at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, in the northern suburbs of Durban.
Our RTS Ophthalmologist, Dr. Abdi Dalmar, has just performed the first operation and is now targeting 60 operations per week and to train local surgeons. Right to Sight will work with MGMH in promoting training for South Africa. In this respect we will be working with a coalition of centers across the country.
Right to Sight will work with MGMH in showcasing an example of high volume cataract surgery and efficiency. The target for the first year at the Hospital is 2,000 surgeries and by year 3, an ambitious yet much needed 5,000 operations will be undertaken.
Dr Abdi Dalmar - RTS Ophthalmologist
“Our hope is that the MGMH ‘High Volume – Low Cost’ training centre model will become the standard for the entire Province of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond, changing precedent and giving sight to the many that are blind and under-served in South Africa.”
