Pilates drive to fight blindness
Sun, May 17, 2009
A charity will run a mass pilates class as its first public fundraiser this week, as part of its attempt to eradicate blindness in 40,000 Africans this year, writes the SUNDAY BUSINESS POST
Right to Sight was founded by Dr Kate Coleman in 2006 and it has already facilitated operations on 27,000 people in Africa by providing the surgical expertise and equipment needed to reverse and prevent blindness.
Right to Sight has been funded by corporate donors to date, but will run its first fundraiser at the RDS in Dublin on Thursday. Coleman, a consultant eye surgeon, hopes to attract several hundred people to take part in the mass pilates class at €25 per person. Right to Sight sends emergency teams to operate in Africa and also trains surgeons in the regions to perform eye operations. Around 10 million people in Africa are deemed “Needlessly blind” and often a ten minute procedure costing €25 can prevent blindness or restore sight, said Coleman.
“Five or ten years ago, it wouldn’t have been possible, but recent technological and clinical advances make eliminating avoidable blindness in the developing world very possible.”
