Kenya has a population of 36 million. 50% of the population live in very rural areas.

Kenya has a national blindness plan and is also acting as a training centre for ophthalmology across East Africa.

Kenya has 36 ophthalmologists, equating to 1 per million population and has a Cataract Surgical Rate (CSR) of around 650 operations per million population.

Current Status

• This Lion’s sponsored hospital serves a large catchment area around the capital city of Nairobi.

• The hospital currently conducts 6,000 cataract operations per annum, and has existing high-volume and cost recovery systems in place.

• RTS has partnered with this hospital to develop its capacity as a training center for East Africa.

RTS Objectives

• To build a long term training programme at the hospital to serve East Africa.

• To expand subspeciality offerings by the hospital.

• To showcase the hospital as an ongoing success story for high quality, high capacity sustainable eye care in Africa.
