WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH IN RIGHT TO SIGHT

Dr. Ogbedo Ernest Njuwe from Nigeria but working in Sychelles was the first trainee to complete Small Incision
Cataract Surgery training at Lions Sightfirst Eye Hospital, Loresho, Kenya, this is a Right to Sight supported
training programme. He has successfully completed a six-week small incision cataract surgery training course.
During his training he performed 54 independent surgeries successfully. He went back to his hospital with the aim
of performing 2000 SICS a year. The cost of the SICS training is €1000 ( Tutition fee and living expenses in Nairobi).

Dr Thami Zini Maleka arrives from South Africa on an Irish Aid scholarship for rapid training in SICS cataract surgery,
before returning to Irish Aid funded training center in Durban to deliver high volume surgery. She is the first of six
scholarship students travelling from Durban to Nairobi, a first for Africa.

Dr Jennifer Billington, Royal College of Surgeons third medical student learns eye lid surgery to treat trachoma
scarring, a painful blinding condition relieved with a simple lid operation. Right to Sight aims to develop medical school
student surgery from African colleges through partnership with RCSI students.

The first African multicenter glaucoma service commences this week in Nairobi as the first SLT laser arrives in
Loresho hospital where the Gallagher family has donated a training center to Right to Sight.

Right to Sight glaucoma expert Dr Vasudev arrives in Nairobi to develop the first expert glaucoma center in Africa.

BUC Student Placement to Mbingo Hospital Cameroon
March 09' - The Buskerud University College (BUC) in Norway approached Right to Sight to partner on an optometry project in Africa. Right to Sight, eager to help with the exchange facilitated that the Mbingo Baptist Hospital in Cameroon be used as the location.

Orissa - Success Stories in Eye Care
April 2009 - Right to Sight has been involved in the capacity building and sustainable growth of JMJ-GVN Hospital since 2007. Since getting involved the Hospital has performed 9,790 surgeries and seen an incredible 70,000 Out-Patients. JMJ-GVN was the first partner of Right to Sight in Eastern India.
